CHASING CHISELS IN FLORENCE WITH RASHA OBAID

Recently, I had the incredible chance to explore the city of Florence on a mission to meet and photograph the talented sculptors who keep the artistic flame alive! My amazing guide for this adventure was my good friend Rasha Obaid, a gifted stone carver, sculptor, and a 2023 QEST Howdens Sculpture Scholar at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art (FAA).

Rasha’s background in architectural stone carving is inspiring but in Florence, she’s delving into the captivating world of figurative sculpture, honing her skills in capturing the human form through clay and drawing. This shift has her studying anatomy, gesture, and the intricate dance of translating a living being onto a blank canvas or a lump of clay.

Beyond her own artistic growth, Rasha has a vision that extends beyond the studio walls. In the next decade, she hopes to use her skills to connect with recent immigrants in the UK. Her aim is to bridge the gap between these communities and the rich artistic and historical heritage that surrounds them. It's a beautiful plan, one that highlights the power of art to create bridges and foster understanding.

My adventure in Florence with Rasha was an unforgettable journey into the heart of a thriving artistic community. And it all began with a sculptor’s kind invitation into their world.
